Free guided hike offered by Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation. Climb Pine Cobble Trail through oak forest to the Class of ’98 Trail, skirting East Mountain, past an ancient rockslide known to locals as “The Boulders” or “The Ledges.” Then climb steeply up to the Appalachian Trail and over East Mountain, whose treeless summit is still covered with rocks after old forest fires burned off the soil. Views east over North Adams. Then hike down AT along Sherman Brook. Meet at Greylock School, Phelps Ave., North Adams, Click for map Carpool to Pine Cobble. Strenuous, Water, snack, sturdy shoes or boots recommended. Severe weather cancels.
